How to Rip Movie DVDs with HandBrake

There are several reasons why someone would want to rip a DVD movie. It could be that the user wants to copy the DVD movie to another device like Apple's iPhone or a mobile phone. Could also be to put several movies on a computer's hard drive to be able to watch them without having to put the original movie DVD into the drive.

HandBrake is a free DVD ripping software for Windows. It can actually be used for additional video conversion tasks but this article will concentrate on the movie DVD ripping aspects of the software.

The interface of HandBrake might look overloaded with features at the first start but it actually is pretty easy to rip a DVD movie using the software. Please note that HandBrake is only able to rip movie DVDs that are not copy protected to comply with national laws.

Three steps are required to rip a DVD movie, all other steps are optional:

Select the Source
Click on the Source button on the top left corner of the screen. Select the DVD drive that is containing the movie DVD. HandBrake will try to analyze the DVD automatically. This process can take up to a minute.

HandBrake will automatically displayed the available titles and chapters that it found on the DVD. The default setting is to rip the first title which is usually the full movie.

Select the Destination directory
The destination directory will be the location where the DVD movie rip will be stored in. Make sure that it has enough free storage space for the movie. This can be a few Gigabytes depending on the output format that is chosen in step 3.

Select the Output format
HandBrake makes use of several presets to aid the user in the third step. Presets are pre-configured profiles for certain devices. Provided are presets for gaming consoles like Sony's PS3 or Microsoft's Xbox 360, Apple devices like the iPod or iPhone and also profiles for various depending on the type of DVD.

Picking a preset ensures good quality rips for that device. The main advantage of those presets is that the user does not have to configure the output settings manually.

The movie can then be added to the movie queue in case of additional movies that should be ripped or converted immediately by pressing on the Start button.

The movie queue might be useful if multiple movie sources are already stored on the computer's hard drive. They could then all be moved to the queue to process all of them at once.

Custom Configuration
The lower half of the main interface displays various settings of the movie that is created. We already mentioned that it is possible to work with Presets which will automatically adjust the settings for best results.

A user might want to define the settings manually if no preset is available for the device owned by the user. These custom settings make it possible to rip a DVD movie for a device that is not listed as a preset.

The user can pick from various video codecs, framerates, audio formats, subtitles, chapters and even highly advanced settings like the selection of a motion estimation method or denoising and deblocking filters.

A new configuration can be saved as a new preset. This would mean that the configuration could be activated just by clicking on the newly created preset instead of filling out the configuration manually every time. This is an excellent option for users who rip DVD movies regularly.
